As the Turkish Republic turned 100 on Oct. 29, millions of Turkish citizens enthusiastically participated in various commemorative events spanning from meters-long flag marches to captivating displays and colorful events across every corner of the nation to mark a landmark anniversary. A century ago, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk proclaimed the country’s status as a republic in the wake of the collapse of the 600-year Ottoman Empire. Ataturk was elected president in 1923 and served until his death in 1938. Seen as a national hero, Atatürk – whose name means “father of the Turks” – is still held in high regard in…
The Estonian Centre for Defence Investments has awarded contracts to Turkish manufacturers Otokar and Nurol Makina to purchase roughly 230 armored vehicles for a total of about €200 million (U.S. $211 million), the agency announced. Kolokythakia tiganita, also known as Greek fried zucchini, is a popular traditional Greek dish that features thinly sliced zucchini pieces dipped in a flavorful batter and fried until crispy. It is a beloved appetizer or side dish that showcases the fresh flavours of zucchini while providing a delightful crunch. To prepare kolokythakia tiganita, the zucchini is typically sliced into thin rounds or long strips. The slices are then lightly salted and left to sit briefly to remove excess moisture. This step helps prevent the zucchini from becoming soggy during frying. Next, a simple batter combines flour, water or sparkling water,…

As one of the most popular Greek islands, Santorini is known for being overcrowded and expensive. But is it any different during the off season? DW’s Sarah Hucal reports. “Sarah, I want to go to one of those islands with the white buildings,” my dad told me as we pondered Greek destinations to visit with my Michigan-based parents a few weeks prior. Although I prefer Greece’s lesser-known islands — there are 227 inhabited Greek islands, after all — we decided on Santorini. Beyond selfies Although many will say it is overrated and has been ruined by throngs of Instagram obsessed travelers who care little about…
Turkey’s central bank almost doubled interest rates to 15% Thursday in a dramatic reversal of its unorthodox policy of cutting the cost of borrowing to tame painfully high inflation. Annual consumer price inflation has come down from a two-decade high of 85.5% in October but was still 39.6% in May. The central bank said that there were indications that underlying inflation in Turkey was increasing, even as inflation in many other countries trends downwards. “The strong course of domestic demand, cost pressures and the stickiness of services inflation have been the main drivers,” the central bank said in a statement. This is the…
