Germany and “other partners” are holding talks with Kiev on “future security commitments for Ukraine”, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Thursday, who also urged China not to provide arms to Russia
“It is clear that we will help Ukraine achieve peace,” the German leader warned before the lower house of the German parliament, the Bundestag. “That’s why we are discussing with Kiev and other partners future security commitments for Ukraine”, explained Olaf Scholz before the lower house of the German Parliament, the Bundestag, before being received on Friday by Joe Biden at the White House.
“But promises of security imperatively presuppose that Ukraine successfully defends itself in this war”, argued the Chancellor, promising that Germany would continue to help Ukraine, invaded a year ago by troops Russians.
The Wall Street Journal reported on February 24 that Berlin, Paris and London doubted the Ukrainians’ ability to repel the Russians from all over their territory and their willingness to provide security guarantees to Kiev, passing through deliveries of sophisticated armaments and the strengthening of ties with NATO.
“The question remains: is Putin ready to negotiate a return to principles and a just peace? For the moment, nothing suggests it, ”lamented the successor of Angela Merkel. According to him, the Russian president “is rather betting on threatening gestures, such as the recent suspension” of the New Start nuclear disarmament treaty concluded with the United States.
Appeal to China
The German leader also appealed to China, suspected by Washington of wanting to deliver weapons to Moscow. “My message to Beijing is clear: use your influence in Moscow to demand the withdrawal of Russian troops. And do not supply arms to the Russian aggressor,” warned Olaf Scholz.
Germany also wants to massively strengthen its production capacity for ammunition and military equipment to meet the security challenges posed by Russian aggression in Ukraine, added the German Chancellor. The government is discussing with the defense industry “a real change of course – towards fast, planable and efficient purchases of military equipment for the Bundeswehr and other European armies”, says Olaf Scholz
The aim, he added, is to create in Germany “an industrial base which makes its contribution to securing peace and freedom in Europe”. “We need continued production of essential weapons, equipment and ammunition. This requires long-term contracts and installments to develop manufacturing capabilities,” the Chancellor asserted.
