TAMAM Division of the Systems Missiles & Space (SMS) Group of of the Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) won a Hellenic Navy tender for an undefined number of its MOSP3000-HD highly stabilized long-range reconnaissance and targeting multi-sensor turret. Naval News learned the information from a source with knowledge of the matter but who wished to remain unnamed.
The new sensor payloads will equip at least six (6) of the existing eight (8) S-70B-6 helicopters in the Hellenic Navy Aviation Command inventory. Note that the sensor payload upgrade is the first part of a modernization package that will improve the capabilities of the S-70B-6 helicopters. On August 1, 2022 the State Department approved a possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to the Government of Greece of follow-on support (FOS) and sustainment of S-70 helicopters for an estimated cost of $162.07 million. The FMS includes aircraft spares, consumables, repair parts, components and accessories, aircraft mission system upgrades, gun mount procurement, equipment upgrades, and other related elements of logistics and program support.
The High Definition (HD) Multi-Sensor Optronic Stabilized Payload (MOSP) 3000 is a multi-sensor electro-optic and infrared (EO/IR) fully digital payload that includes a continuous optical zoom thermal camera with 1280×1024 (HD) resolution, a continuous day color zoom camera, automatic SWIR camera TV tracker, a laser rangefinder, high-performance SWIR spotter and other functions or sensors.
The Navy operates eight S-70B-6 and three S-70B helicopters as well as a number of AB212s while it will receive in the near future seven (7) MH60R helicopters that will replace the remaining AB212s. Greece is considering to increase the number of MH60R with additional orders in order to equip its new and modernized surface combatants such as the FDI frigates, the new corvettes (on-going competition) and the Hydra-class frigates which will follow an MLU, with the most advanced variant of Lockheed Martin’s Seahawk family.
