Mamma Mia 3, the third movie of the iconic musical, is confirmed!
The next film of Mamma Mia! has been anticipated for some time now, with the film’s producer, Judy Kramer even saying that everyone wants it. After the success of the 2008 movie, filmed in Skopelos, and the second in 2018, “Mamma Mia” is back again.
The confirmation of the new film was made by the British comedian, Alan Carr. After the launch of the new reality competition “Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream,” on which he is a judge, revealed in a new interview with Capital Breakfast the plans for the third film.
In the new competition, Carr along with fellow judges Jessie Ware, Samantha Barks and Amber Riley are looking for the next person to play Sophie and Skye in the musical of the same name in London’s West End.
The ‘Capital Breakfast’ host asked: “Mamma Mia has been in the West End for 25 years, be honest, is this a way for you to get into the cast?”
Carr then reported: “I’ve got an exclusive for you, Judy Craymer the producer has said that I’m going to be in Mamma Mia 3. We did a press conference and I said, ‘Say it, say it!’. Because she’d had a few wines when she said it so I wanted her to say it in front of all the press…so there you go.”
“So, as in the film?” Sian pressed.
Alan beamed: “The film, yeah – I’m going to Hollywood baby!”
Judy Craymer told Vogue in September: “I think we have to bring a certain closure to these characters,” confirming the threequel is in the works but suggesting this will be the last of the series.
Among the protagonists of the two films were Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth. However, it is not yet known who will be joining the third upcoming film.
During her recent chat with Variety, Kramer also revealed information about the new sequel.
“I am so hands on with everything that I can only do so much. So the TV show has been a big priority. I’m sure [the third movie] will happen. I’m in the privileged position that I have Universal Studios wanting to do it, who I love working with, and I have a storyline,” Craymer revealed.
While Craymer is fully behind a third movie, the producer said the only people she needs backing from are ABBA’s Bjorn and Benny.
“It just always takes a certain amount of time with Mamma Mia. Bjorn and Benny always take a certain amount of convincing. I don’t know how much more convincing they’re gonna have because everybody wants another film. But they had ABBA Voyage and then they wanted a rest from ABBA stuff,” she explained.
“But it will happen. We’ve done the television show and now maybe I’ll focus on the movie. Maybe that’ll be a second 25-year celebration,” she added.
Earlier this year, Craymer said she will bring Meryl Streep back as Donna Sheridan for the threequel, which is “in its earliest stages”.
“I don’t want to over-egg it, but I know there’s a trilogy there. There is a story there, and I do think Meryl should come back – and if the script is right, she would, I think, because she really loved playing Donna,” Craymer added of Streep’s potential return.
