Athens Mayor Aaron “Bubba” Smith proclaimed Friday, Oct. 27 as Pink Out Day in the City of Athens. Smith and members of the City Council and community encourage residents to wear pink think pink and think positive during Monday’s regular meeting of the Athens City Council.
Breast Cancer is the second most common diagnosed form of cancer for women in the United States. Breast cancer is also the second leading cause of cancer deaths of women.
During October, which is breast cancer awareness month, residents were reminded that mammograms are effective at detecting breast cancer prior to detection from physical exams.
Mayor Smith also proclaimed Saturday, Nov. 4 as Fall Clean up Day and America Recycles Day in Athens.
The council also approved the Quarterly Investment Report presented by the City’s Finance Director Mandie Quigg.
Council members authorized City Manager Elizabeth Borstad to enter into agreements for employee health and ancillary benefits from Candence Insurance for 2024.
Borstad was also authorized to enter into agreements for Property, Liability, and Workers’ Compensation Insurance.
The council approved a resolution authorizing Athens Economic Development Corporation to provide funds up to $100,000 for the Cain Park restroom, concessions building project.
Borstad was also authorized to terminate the existing purchase agreement with Silsbee Ford Inc. for the purchase of two police patrol vehicles
This issue was discussed at a prior meeting of the City Council.
Silsbee Ford Inc has previously communicated with the City they were unable to meet the order of two police vehicles in the agreed upon time frame, due to supply chain issues and increasing costs.
The council then approved a resolution which included an invitation to bid on a total of five police department vehicles budgeted from 2022 and 2023, to Bob-El Nevada. The city manager was also authorized to execute the purchase agreement.
The consent agenda was also approved prior to the meeting adjourning.
The Athens City Council meets regularly on the second and fourth Monday of the month in the Civic Hall, Room 216 of the Cain Center, 915 S. Palestine Street, Athens.
