Türkiye has recalled its ambassador to Israel for consultations, signaling a significant setback in the recently restored diplomatic relations between the two nations.
The move comes against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict in Gaza and a deepening humanitarian crisis in the enclave.
Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry reasoned its decision by citing the “humanitarian tragedy unfolding in Gaza due to continuous attacks by Israel against civilians.”
The ministry expressed concerns over Israel’s refusal to heed calls for a ceasefire and ensure an uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid to the affected region.
In a statement, the ministry said, “In view of the unfolding humanitarian tragedy in Gaza caused by the continuing attacks by Israel against civilians, and Israel’s refusal of calls for a ceasefire and continuous and unhindered flow of humanitarian aid, it was decided to recall our ambassador in Tel Aviv.”
This development marks a downturn in diplomatic relations, which were largely restored last fall when both countries exchanged ambassadors after a four-year hiatus. Şakir Özkan Torunlar had been serving as Türkiye’s envoy to Israel since November 2022.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry issued a response later in the day, saying Ankara’s decision marked “another step to side with the terrorist organization Hamas.
Last month, Israel evacuated all of its diplomats from Türkiye over security concerns amid ongoing anti-Israel protests in the country.

On Oct. 17, Israel also advised its citizens to leave Türkiye immediately, citing “the heightened motivation of terrorist actors.”
